Our world is very loud right now. We're inundated with a bottomless, constant stream of news, chimes, alerts—where has our attention gone? If writing calls us to pay attention to ourselves, to align ourselves with our senses, this class can be seen as a meditation, by writing alongside writers who also get deeply in touch with themselves on the page. In this generative class, we’ll slow-read a wide variety of texts, from prose poems to essays to short stories, and pay attention to craft, syntax, and what gives us pleasure. From the essays of James Baldwin to the poems of Ada Limón and the haikus of Basho, we’ll be inspired to expand our toolbox and dig deeply into our own words through in-class generative writing time. This class aims to get writers in tune with their own minds and desires, through the slower pace of careful reading and writing. By the end of the session, writers will either have a few shorter pieces or one longer piece they've worked on throughout the classes.
