Douglas Stuart is known as a writer who writes first in service to his characters, memory, and the self, and then uses craft to clarify his fiction. Coming from the world of fashion, he learned by writing how to coax out, embroider, and embellish his themes, and has much to teach writers about trusting intuition and seeking answers not from rules, but from digging more deeply into the questions that surround their characters.
