4-Week: Picture Book Intensive

This workshop will focus on specific craft areas of your narrative picture book manuscript. During each session, we’ll cover one craft area, using existing picture books and examples from your stories for discussion. If time permits, you may begin revising or brainstorming for that particular craft topic.

Please bring 9 copies of your completed picture book story-properly formatted and stapled-to the first session.

Week 1: Characters
Developing a strong character, including how to introduce your characters and making them engaging.

Week 2: Plot
What’s your story about and how do we know? What is the conflict or goal? How do you move from point A to B to C? Identify these key points to make sure your story flows well.

Week 3: Illustration Notes
Improve your ability to know when text works better in illustrations or needs to be there. Also, learn when to include illustration notes and what that might look like (though it’s not an exact science!).

Week 4: Language Tools
Make sure your sentences shine, your words wow, and you are using those language tools that will work best for your stories.
Prerequisite: Intro to the Children’s Picture Book. Recommended (but not required): 8-week Writing the Children’s Picture Book or permission of the instructor. To gain permission, please email info@lighthousewriters.org.
