4-Week Reading as a Writer: Graphic Novels

The graphic novel format has been transformed by an explosion of exciting innovations in form, style, and subject matter in recent years. In this class we will survey a handful of the best graphic novels of the last 30 years, and we will ask how we, as writers, can borrow from them and take inspiration from them to challenge and expand our own narrative techniques. Readings* will include Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Mr Punch by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and Fun Home by Allison Bechdel. The class is for prose writers, poets, and anyone else interested in exploring the tricks, tools, and mysteries of narrative craft.

Please Note: In order to accomodate the Writer's Studio events with Jennifer Egan, as well as Thanksgiving day, this class will meet on the following dates--Thursdays, Oct. 31, Nov. 14, Nov. 21, and Dec. 5

*These books are available to Lighthouse students at a 10% discount at the Tattered Cover on Colfax. Simply tell a Tattered Cover employee you are enrolled in a course at Lighthouse and they will direct you to where the books are shelved.
