The key to any unforgettable work of prose resides in the quality of its scenes. In this class, we’ll examine some of the best scenes ever written by writers such as Megha Majumdar and Grace Talusan and investigate what it takes to write a scene that deepens our sense of character and conflict and escalates the action. Then we’ll work on an exercise to bring the lessons home.
This is a Workshop for Democracy, designed by Steve Almond. In order to provide the discounted tuition (the normal price is $75 for members), Steve will teach the course pro bono in hopes that registrants contribute the balance of their usual tuition, plus a bit more, to a candidate or cause of their choosing. The suggested donation is $75, though registrants are free to contribute more if they wish. Before class, Steve will *briefly* discuss this aspect of the course with participants, emphasizing ways citizens can be actively involved in this vital moment. No specific candidate or political party will be advocated for or endorsed as part of the Workshop for Democracy.
