Our Work in the Community

School Outreach

The Young Writers Program offers creative writing workshops in public and private schools as well as juvenile residential treatment centers throughout the Denver metro area. Led by working, published writers with a passion for sharing their craft, our outreach workshops provide access to our innovative creative writing programming for young people who cannot come to Lighthouse. Our outreach instructors actively engage young writers in the art of creative writing, provide new tools for self-expression, and increase literacy and writing skills.

We offer workshops in poetry, short story, novel, memoir, flash fiction, graphic novel, personal essay, and more. And because we know much of school curriculum is already in place, we customize workshops to fit individual classroom or program goals. We provide hour-long presentations, one-day or week-long intensives, after-school programs, multi-week sessions, or more long-term workshops culminating in public readings or published anthologies (or both) depending on the needs of the school or program and its young writers.

In our outreach program, we consider ourselves partners to teachers and parents as we nurture the next generation of novelists, poets, fictioneers, and readers.

The Bounceback Program

In keeping with the mission of Lighthouse Writers Workshop to ensure that individuals achieve their fullest potential as artists and human beings, the YWP’s Bounceback program provides professional writers as mentors for at-risk youth ages 10-20 who love to write but have limited access to creative writing instruction. Bounceback fosters supportive, one-on-one or very small group relationships for at-risk young writers in juvenile treatment centers in Denver and the Front Range.

If you are interested in having Lighthouse instructors come to your school or program, or if you would like more information about our Bounceback Program, please contact Roxanne Banks Malia, Young Writers Program Outreach Coordinator, at roxanne (at) lighthousewriters (dot) org.
