Acceptable Use Policy for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Lighthouse Workshops and Programs
Lighthouse recognizes that Artificial Technology (AI) is moving quickly, and writers, teachers, and artists are grappling in real time with the risks and rewards this technology presents. This policy intends to safeguard the creative work and privacy of writers in our community, and reiterate our belief that writing is an act of human expression and creativity. We will update the policy as the technology and its uses evolve.
Core Principles
- Artistic Integrity: AI should not replace the substantive intellectual and creative work of storytelling, poetry, or any other work of imagination.
- Transparency: Any significant use of AI in the classroom, either from writers, teachers, or the organization, should be disclosed as such.
- Human-centered and learning-focused: Any AI use in the classroom should ultimately serve the learning and artistic development of participants rather than replace human expertise and expression.
- Reliability and Accuracy: The final responsibility for all materials rests with the person who created them, not any supportive technology. Any AI contribution should be verified and approved by the human using it.
AI use in Lighthouse Workshops and Programs:
- Lighthouse discourages the use of AI in ways that replace human creativity and labor in the artistic process. This includes using AI to draft new material or revise original material. Pieces submitted to workshops that rely on AI for generation, revision, translation, or major editing should be accompanied by a note disclosing how AI was used.
- Any material written or shared as part of a Lighthouse program is not permitted to be entered into an AI tool without the express written permission of the creator.
- Entering personal information about peers and community members, including name, contact information, background, etc., into an AI tool is strictly prohibited.
- Workshop participants should never use AI to generate feedback and comments on the work of other writers. After all, we’re here to learn how our peers respond to our work, and AI-generated responses do not serve that purpose.
- Faculty and participants may use AI for administrative purposes, prompt generation, research, general formatting (including for accessibility), note-taking, and other tasks that do not replace human interaction. In these cases, use should be cited.
- For youth programs (under 18), any AI use in the classroom will be shared with parents/guardians ahead of time and require parental/guardian permission.
