What’s a Portfolio?

A portfolio can be any collection of writing and other materials, for any literary purpose. Examples:

  • A group of short stories, essays, and references for applications to MFA or PhD programs, the Book Project, the Poetry Collective, grants, contests, fellowships, or residencies.
  • A set of notes, sample chapters, and a synopsis/outline for your memoir or novel, in preparation for writing the full project, finding representation, or submitting to editors.
  • A book proposal for nonfiction/memoir projects to send to an agent.
  • A collection of poems for a chapbook.
  • Feature-length scripts, pitch deck, treatment, and/or an original pilot to send to contests or potential managers.
  • Any amount of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, in pursuit of your goals.
