Join us for a celebration of three amazing books by three longtime Lighthousers, Teague von Bohlen, R.L. Maizes, and Gary Shcanbacher. They’ll read from their most recent books, and engage in a discussion on how they continue to find inspiration, and they’ll share wisdom for writers who are deep in the trenches, writing books that speak to the the human condition.
Teague von Bohlen is an Associate Professor of Fiction at the University of Colorado Denver, where he runs the student newspaper The Sentry and serves as Fiction Editor for the literary magazine Copper Nickel. He works the literary, pop-culture, and social/political commentary beats for the alt-weekly Westword. His first novel, The Pull of the Earth, won the Colorado Book Award.
R.L. Maizes is the author of the novel A Complete Fiction, a Colorado Book Award Finalist and Winner of a Colorado Authors League Award. Her debut novel, Other People’s Pets, won the 2021 Colorado Book Award in Fiction and was a Library Journal Best Debut of Summer/Fall 2020. She is also the author of the short story collection We Love Anderson Cooper. Her stories have aired on NPR and can be found in Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading and in The Best Small Fictions 2020.
Gary Schanbacher has been with Lighthouse since before the turn of the century as a member, a once-in-a-blue-moon facilitator, and as a member of the Board of Directors. He’s the author of three books of fiction including his latest, The Waterman. His books have won the Colorado Book Award, the SPUR Award from the Western Writers of America, the High Plains First Book award, the Eric Hoffer Book Award in General Fiction, and the Langum Prize in American Historical Fiction.
