Many writers dread revision. They think of it as less creative than generation; or they are afraid to let go of their initial ideas; or they simply don’t know what to do or how to do it. This critique-based class will attack these fears head on. Each week, we'll examine a wide range of different tactics and approaches to revision, applying these tactics and approaches to that week’s workshop drafts—and then, to our own drafts. In doing so, we'll not only hone our revision skills; we'll improve our workshopping skills. By the end of this class, you may even start looking forward to the revision process!
Note: This is a critique-based class that also focuses on developing a specific craft skill (revision). Each week, starting in week two, two participant story drafts will 1) be workshopped and 2) serve as case studies on which the class applies that week’s lesson. Everyone in class will therefore have the opportunity to workshop one draft over the course of the class. Ideally, you will come to this class with one draft in hand. Over the course of the class, you should plan on revising this draft several times.
Scheduling note: This class will skip the week of Thanksgiving.
