In this eight-week workshop, we’ll explore how the tools of the playwright can deepen and transform our prose. Through discussion, readings, and guided exercises, we’ll unpack how character archetypes, plot progression, and exposition intertwine with theatrical devices to create dialogue that drives the story. We'll examine how to build dialogue that reveal emotion through subtext and use voice as an intentional engine of narrative. Writers will have the opportunity to receive one round of focused, first-blush feedback on a work-in-progress, centered on how dialogue shapes momentum, tension, and meaning within their piece. You’ll come away with new strategies for crafting dialogue that performs on the page as powerfully as it would on the stage.
Scheduling note: This class will skip the week of Thanksgiving.
