Fiction is packed with deep, meaningful representations of friendships. That doesn’t mean it’s easy to write, but try writing about real friendships in nonfiction and the stakes are instantly raised. In this workshop, we’ll talk about translating the depth of a great friendship to the page. We’ll also talk about the ethics of using people in our real life as subjects in our writing, the joys as well as pitfalls, and how to be diligent and respectful while also telling the best, truest story we can. We’ll read from a handful of sources, taking breaks to talk about what we read and how it was accomplished, before doing some generative writing.
