Dear Editor: A Free Workshop for BIPOC+ Writers on Submitting to Literary Journals

$0.00 Members
$0.00 Non-members

This workshop will demystify the process of submitting to (and publishing in) literary journals, including choosing which pieces to send, writing cover letters and bios, and corresponding with editors. The process can feel especially opaque and marginalizing to writers whose work and communities have historically been underrepresented in publishing. Together, we’ll go over common missteps and frustrations, some minor and some significant, and we’ll discuss how to avoid or address them.

Participants who register at least two weeks in advance will have the opportunity to send in submission packets for possible discussion in class. The instructor will select 4–6 packets representing a range of genres/forms and publication concerns. After discussing the packets, we’ll draft cover letters, bios, and additional short pieces of writing that the submission process may require, such as queries, withdrawals, and responses to acceptances and rejections. We’ll close with a conversation about the publishing landscape for Asian American and Pacific Islander writers in particular, highlighting venues and communities that support AAPI writing.

This course is presented by Kundiman. Writers who identify as part of the AAPI community are encouraged to attend.
