Benjamin Labatut (winner of the 2021 International Booker Prize) says in his nonfiction-based novel When We Cease to Understand the World: "Where before there had been a cause for every effect, now there was a spectrum of probabilities.” By following this principle, the art of blending fact and fiction allows both disciplines to enhance each other, all within the framework of expansive narrative storytelling. The idea to create this kind of mixture can sometimes feel overwhelming in practive and sometimes restricting in theory. In this class, we'll read different writers whose work masterfully interweaves fact with fiction. We'll also experiment in our own writing through modeling techniques from our assigned readings. Come ready to explore this unique spectrum of narrative possibilities!
