This class is designed for writers who want feedback on their projects, but don't have the time for critique in the traditional sense, where you take home large sections of other writers' work and leave extensive comments. Instead, each week, the instructor will assign an optional reading to inspire participants, and each writer will bring in five pages each to read aloud to the group and get verbal, first blush feedback. We'll talk about what each writer is working on and brainstorm to help keep them working. The instructor will assign writing exercises that will inspire and help with different craft topics and themes, often based on what the instructor thinks will be most beneficial for what the writers are working on, and struggling with. It's up to the participant what work they do, but participants do need to be active listeners and participate in feedback.
The goal of this workshop is to be generative and help writers move forward with their short story/essay/book while not taking up as much time as workshops sometimes can. Rather than getting a longer period of feedback on a large section of your work once or twice during the class, in this workshop you'll get a shorter period of time on a shorter section, but get that feedback every week, giving writers weekly inspiration and feedback on a manageable amount of work. This is often more helpful to keep writers working each week and making progress.
