West Fest: The West Wears Many Hats—Writing Regardless of Genre (Virtual)

$75.00 Members
$85.00 Non-members

When you think of the Western genre, what comes to mind? A cowboy on horseback looking across the plains, a gunslinging lone rider wandering in the distance? Conversely, what happens when you hear the phrase Space Western? The images those words call forth aren’t as easily defined.

In this craft seminar we will discuss the basic structure of a plot-driven story, the foundational elements of genre fiction, and their applications to classic elements of Western fiction. Once we establish the ground rules of each, we’ll have the background to blend the Western aesthetic with known genres, allowing you to create something that is unique to your writing style. Open to all levels and interests, we invite you to learn the rules of genre writing in order to break them and create a Western the world has yet to see.

This class is a part of West Fest, a celebration of writing in and about the American West, the weekend of November 7–8. Registrations for our virtual craft seminars will open to the general public two weeks prior to the start of the fest. If you would like to secure your spot in this class beforehand, please register for a Virtual Pass. Other West Fest passholders may choose any of our other in-person classes.
