Writing in Color programming celebrates writers and creatives of all genres and levels, focusing on the traditions, histories, triumphs, and challenges of those who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC+). The goal of this program is to support BIPOC+ writers and creatives as they focus on their writing practice by fostering a supportive and encouraging community. We ask that all participants be mindful of this intention; anyone who is disruptive may be asked to leave.
Finding the best form or "shape" for an essay can not only amplify its power, but open up new realms of possibility for writing and meaning-making. In this class, we'll study various forms that contemporary essayists including Eula Biss, Jamil Jan Kochai, and Elisa Gabbert all use to great effect: epistolary, lists, annotated, braided, and more. Through discussion and writing prompts, we'll figure out how to choose the right container for your subject, and also how to use various forms to generate new essays.
