Speculative fiction creates wonders that depend on unfamiliar dystopias, unreal physics, and unexpected motivations. How does a story equip the reader for these magical effects without bogging down the story in boring, hard-to-absorb exposition? How do you fix a withholding narrator? When is the right moment to lay out the goblins' foreign exchange policy? This revision-focused seminar explores classic works by Butler, Le Guin, Delany, and others for techniques to leverage conflict, character, and even sentence structure to build our worlds while keeping our readers breathless.
This course is a part of Spec Fest, a two-day celebration of speculative fiction taking place the weekend of August 29-30, and is open to the public. To learn more and find passes, which include discounted registrations to this event, click here.
