This hands-on seminar explores a shape-shifting form that privileges the figurative over the literal, ambiguity over certainty, and meditation over reportage—a way of writing "that tilts more toward metaphor than fact, that exists in a crack between genres yet remains unclassifiable." Together, we'll consider the distinction between invention, deception, and the use of imagination and speculation as instruments of discovery.
Through discussions, short readings, and in-class writing prompts, we'll explore practical strategies for deepening and complicating our work through such speculative techniques as reimagining the archive, inhabiting myth, and "perhapsing.”
