8-Week: Intermediate Short Story Workshop

$375.00 Members
$405.00 Non-members

Building on the foundations of Intro to Writing the Short Story, this class will consist primarily of workshopping short story and novel drafts. Each participant will have two opportunities to submit their work for peer review, one of which may (but does not have to) be a revision. In addition, we’ll use writing exercises and published short stories as launching points for generating new material and discussing all aspects of fictional craft. Writers are encouraged to repeat this class as often as needed to provide structure for consistent output. Writers in this course can expect in-class writing, assigned readings, discussion, and feedback from your peers and instructor. Workshop will focus on questions from the writer and aiding them in best fulfilling their own visions for their work. We'll be focusing our critique energies on a robust in-class discussion, with limited written feedback.

Prerequisite: Intro to Writing the Short Story or instructor’s permission. Students need to have workshop experience and a basic understanding of the different POVs, charting a story with Freytag’s pyramid, dialogue (summarized and direct), and balancing showing with telling. To gain permission, please send a brief writing sample (three to five pages) to info@lighthousewriters.org.
