Lyricism in poetry refers to the musical qualities of language—the ways that sound and syntax, rhythm and repetition, can make a poem sing. It also refers to the ways that a poem deploys association and conceptual leaps. In this craft intensive, we’ll lean into lyricism together by first studying highly lyrical published poetry, and then harnessing the beguiling power of lyricism in our own work. By the end of this course, writers will gain not only a deeper understanding of the role that lyricism can play in writing unique and compelling poems, but also new strategies for writing sonically beautiful and surprising work.
