8-Week: Outward-Facing Memoir

$375.00 Members
$405.00 Non-members

This course will focus on the use of personal narrative to tell a bigger story; that bigger story could be about an entire community, a profession, or a particular issue dear to your heart. In class, we'll focus on optimum narrative structure, and on how to transition back-and-forth from the personal to the bigger picture. We'll study examples in which authors have thoroughly accomplished both a personal through line and the outward looking stance. Examples will include Braiding Sweetgrass, Stay True, The Yellow House, Spirit RunThe Undocumented Americans and other books that are similar in scope.

Writers will have the option, if they are willing, to share work in progress with the group, so that participants may share what they found most engaging about the work of their peers. Writers who submit work can receive a written critique from the instructor on request. For the most part, however, we'll use short lecture, readings, and discussion to connect and deepen our understanding of the subject, and our primary activity will involve participants unpacking the work of the published authors that we agree to study together.

This class is full, but we highly recommend 8-Week: The Art of the Crónica as a similarly themed class, focused on building the world into the nonfiction.
