This class held in-person or on Zoom!
What's better than hitting a groove with a project, when everything feels automatic? But we don't often know how we found the groove until after we’ve finished a project, which is why the early stages can feel bogged down by limitless choices. This workshop is designed for writers working on fiction or nonfiction books who could benefit from the weekly, rotating mentorship of writers who have recently made it through to the other side. They come bearing gifts! Each week a writer will visit class (in-person or via Zoom) and provide three things: (1) one thing they wish they knew earlier, before writing or finishing the book; (2) a mini-lesson on one critical thing that helped them succeed, complete with an exercise for each writer to try on their own book; and (3) a sample passage of their work for all participants to read and ask questions about. Confirmed guests include authors (and Book Project alums) Simone Stolzoff, Jan Thomas, Theodore McCombs, and novelist Jihyun Jun (Knopf novel forthcoming spring 2025).
Half of each class will be devoted to lessons from visiting writers; the other half to participants' own projects.
This class is being held using our hybrid technology--designed for writers to attend in person or remotely.
Come with your ideas, your draft, or anything in between, and leave with a roadmap of next steps, a collection of helpful peers, and the confidence that you’ve got what you need to get the book done.
Note: This class will meet on 8 Thursdays, but will skip Sept. 19, as that's the night of the Lighthouse's Illumination Gala 2024, featuring Cheryl Strayed.
