Writing Fiction in Nonfiction

How do we make new art from old stories? How can we see old stories anew, digging deeper into the big questions of our lives? In this seminar class, full of exercises and new ideas, we'll practice tips and techniques from Maxine Hong Kingston and Anna Deavere Smith. Using a little fiction and a lot of art, we'll capture details we hadn't remembered and put them to immediate use in our writing. We'll trace the what ifs. We'll study and apply the ways that fiction—so long as we tell the reader it's fiction—can light-up our personal writing.
